About Virology Testing Health Equity Fund

Virology is the study of viruses and virus-like agents, including (but not limited to) their taxonomy, disease-producing properties, and genetics. The propensity of viruses to infect cells selectively in particular organs is referred to as tropism (either on cellular or organ level), which is dependent on both viral and host factors.

Testing provides the means for the primary identification of a wide variety of viral infections (such as respiratory viruses, herpes viruses, enteroviruses, and many others), the monitoring of viral load in chronic disease (HIV, HCV, and HBV), and the quantitative assessment of viral infection or reactivation after transplantion and in other immunocompromised patients (CMV, EBV, and BK). Serological tests are used to show the presence or absence of antibodies to a specific virus, and can confirm a specific viral diagnosis while helping in determining prognosis.

Examples of virology testing would include immunofluorescence, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), radioimmune precipitation and Western blot assays. Molecular techniques (such as polymerase chain reaction or PCR) are widely used for diagnostic clinical virology.
