Seattle Cancer Care AllianceDr. Stewart became the Medical Director of Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), Member of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and Professor of Medicine at University of Washington in 2000. He is also an attending physician at Harborview Medical Center and the VA Puget Sound Medical Center. In 2013, he became Acting Head, Division of Medical Oncology, Department of Medicine at the University of Washington Medical Center.

From 1992, Dr. Stewart served as Chief in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, Associate Professor of Medicine, Associate Professor of Cell Biology, and Professor of Medicine and Cell Biology at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. From 1995 – 2000, he was the Deputy Director for Clinical Affairs at the University of Massachusetts Cancer Center and Vice Chair of Medicine.

At SCCA, Dr. Stewart serves on the Medical Executive Committee (Chair), Senior Management Team, General Oncology Clinic Operations Team, Infection Committee (Local and Pan Alliance), BMT Clinical Advisory Committee, Standard Practice Committee, Strategic Implementation Committee, Executive Quality Committee, Business Development Planning and Implementation Committee, Inpatient Operations, Risk Management/Patient Relations Committee, Transplant Clinical Operations Team, Network Oversight Committee, Clinical Oncology Oversight Committee, Pediatric Program Oversight Committee, and is Co-Chair of the Clinical Operations Committee.

At the University of Washington, he serves on the Graduate Medical Education Committee, Medical Oncology Sections, Credentials Committee, UW Medicine Palliative Care Center of Excellence Clinical Strategic Planning Committee, Medical Leadership Council, Medical Staff Administrative Committee, University of Washington Physicians Board, OMSA Board, Clinical Advisory Council and is Chair of the UW Medicine Strategic Planning for Oncology Workgroup.

Nationally, Dr. Stewart serves as a member of the Board of Directors with the National Cancer Center Network (NCCN) and also serves on the Governance Committee, Best Practices Committee and Guidelines Steering Committee. Dr. Stewart serves on the Board of Directors for Patient Advocate Foundation (PAF) and National Patient Advocate Foundation (NPAF).

Dr. Stewart received his A.B. in Chemistry from Indiana University and his M.D. from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he also completed his residency in Medicine in 1980, and a fellowship in Oncology in 1981. He then completed a fellowship in Hematology from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1983.

His research previously centered on in vivo murine stem cell transplant models in non- or minimally myeloablative recipients and clinical transplantation. He also accomplished studies in a variety of oncologic diseases focusing on head and neck cancer, esophageal cancer, and hematologic malignancies. Relevant to his current position, he focuses on clinical productivity, workforce training and deployment in oncology.
